City of Aspen and Pitkin County
Non-Profit Grant Training

Welcome to our fifth year of free grant application and organizational capacity training for the non-profits of the Roaring Fork Valley. Join staff from the City of Aspen and Pitkin County to learn about their grant application process and expectations, and to hone your skills at Performance Measurement.
Once again, Bill Rivenbark will join us to continue to build on our understanding and knowledge of the outcome-based evaluation using the performance measurement system in City and County grants.
You will note there are three different sessions… Basic, Advanced and Board Member Primer (for a better understanding of what the sessions offer, please review the descriptions listed on the back of this flyer). You are welcome to sign up for any and all trainings offered, and we encourage your organization to participate in this outstanding offering.

Description of Trainings

Basic Training - Grant Application & Outcome Measures: General introduction to creating an effective performance measurement system as a tool to evaluate your program’s effectiveness. Also, general information regarding the “hows” and “whys” of the grant application.

Outcome Measure Advanced Training: Training on using your performance measures and completing the required “performance measure report” for partnership organizations and any organizations that receive $5,000 or over in grant funding (which includes the combination of City and County funding). Local agencies also will present their performance measures and discuss how they have used what they learned to improve their programs. One advanced training focuses on arts-based organizations and another on community- based organizations, including health & human services.

Board Member & Executive Director Primer: A primer focusing on three areas of responsibility:
§ General: Includes creation and periodic review of mission statements, selection and annual evaluation of executive directors, planning for organizational development, raising adequate resources for organizations, and the responsibility of board leadership and accountability. Concludes with discussion questions that require participants to analyze and discuss three organizational dilemmas that confront nonprofit board members, which involve resource expansion, executive director’s performance, and conflict of interest.
§ Fundraising: A discussion on the appropriate fundraising responsibilities of nonprofit board members and on why individuals give to nonprofit organizations. It concludes with a brainstorming exercise on identifying new fundraising strategies for each participating board.
§ Fiduciary: Presents major fiduciary responsibilities of nonprofit board members, including budget preparation and adoption, approval of the aggregate salary and wage increase, review of monthly financial statements, and approval of financial policies. Common financial dilemmas faced by board members are then used for discussion and feedback.
